Question:

141 Mr. Gogarty asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason planning for major roofing projects at Neilstown national school are at an early stage when the school roof was replaced in 1999 and is in fine condition and when other projects such as the replacement of windows and railings have not been tackled. [26973/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 139 to 141, inclusive, together.

I take it the Deputy is referring to St. Peter the Apostle junior and senior schools, roll Nos. 19569 and 19642, in Parliamentary Question No. 141.

My Department did grant aid roof works at these schools in 1999 and has no plans for any further such works.

Architectural planning for window and fencing projects at St. Peter the Apostle junior and senior schools, Neilstown is at an advanced stage.

I will announce my Department's proposals in relation to school buildings in the new year. In the meantime, it is not possible to say when projects will proceed to tender and construction.

My Department will be in touch with the school authorities as soon as possible regarding the sewage odours in the classrooms. The schools should use their devolved grant to deal with any urgent health and safety matters.

Question:

142 Mr. Gogarty asked the Minister for Education and Science if additional funding is available to Coláiste Pádraig, Lucan, for the renewal and redecoration of its old building, notwithstanding the ongoing work on the construction of the new extension, in view of the fact that the old building will have to be used for many years to come. [26974/02]

My Department is committed to the funding of the extension project and associated refurbishment works at the school in question.

When an application for additional accommodation is being considered in any school the existing accommodation is also examined and consideration is given to educational spaces that require refurbishment or are affected by change of usage.

It must be stressed that the capital allocation available to my Department is not intended for redecoration of existing accommodation. This work is considered to be a matter for the school authority to finance on an ongoing basis.
