Vol. 559 No. 6

Written Answers. - Telecommunications Network.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

159 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if all telecommunications antennae and support structures here are in compliance with the International Radiation Protection Association guidelines; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23905/02]

Guidelines concerning exposure to radio frequency radiation have been developed by the International Committee on Non-ionising Radiation Protection.

Compliance with the international guidelines is a condition attached to all communications licences for mobile telephony services issued in Ireland. The monitoring of telecommunications base stations for compliance with these guidelines is a matter for the Commission for Communications Regulation. This was previously the responsibility of the director for telecommunications regulation.

The Director has, on a regular basis, undertaken audits of telecommunication stations to ensure that the emission limits for non-ionising radiation are being complied with. The audit reports have been placed in the public domain.
