64 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science the way in which he intends to ensure a greater gender balance in the provision of primary school teachers; and his plans to take steps to ensure a greater number of men enter the profession. [26596/02]

The gender equality unit of my Department is in the process of establishing a committee to make recommendations for an initiative which will target male second level students to consider primary teaching as a career. It is hoped that the committee will commence its work early in 2003.
