Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Closures.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

373 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science when the agreed arbitration compensation will be paid to the teachers who were re-located arising from the closure of the Army apprentice school in Naas, County Kildare. [1189/03]

The issue of compensation for certain teachers formerly employed in the Army apprentice school, Naas, was referred to a rights commissioner in February 2002 following discussions with the teachers concerned and the Teachers Union of Ireland. The rights commissioner issued his recommendation on 6 March 2002. The Teachers' Union of Ireland gave notice of appeal against the decision on 15 April but then indicated acceptance of the decision on 20 August 2002.

The detailed implementation of the rights commissioner's decision will require further discussions with the union concerned and arrangements are being made for these discussions to take place in the very near future. Payment will be made immediately thereafter.
