The coastal protection strategy study is expected to be completed in two years. Coastal mapping, which is associated with the study, may take longer and is dependent on the rate at which it is to be progressed. The process of appointing consultants is currently under way and it is anticipated that the contract will be awarded in early 2003.
Priority coast protection works are being addressed in consultation with the local authorities concerned. I have approved a national coast protection programme for 2003 to utilise the Exchequer allocation of €1.072 million for the year and have advised the local authorities concerned. The question of what Exchequer funding may be available for coast protection works in 2004 or later will have to be decided by Government in due course.
Legislative proposals to support the development and effective operation of integrated coastal zone management will be formulated by my Department in co-operation with the other public bodies concerned. My objective is to have these proposals published in 2004.
