Question:

646 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children the percentage of children born to single mothers in each of the years 1999 to 2002, inclusive. [1293/03]

Data on births are compiled by the Central Statistics Office and published in the annual and quarterly reports on vital statistics. The latest period for which data are available is January to September 2002. These figures are set out in the following table in addition to figures for 1999, 2000 and 2001.

647 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children the marriage rate per 100,000 for 1970 and 2002 or the most recent annual statistic. [1294/03]

Data on marriages is compiled by the Central Statistics Office and published in the annual and quarterly reports on vital statistics. The latest year for which data are available is 2001. The marriage rates per 100,000 population for 1970 and 2001 were 704.4 and 501.3 respectively. The 2001 rate is provisional based on year of registration.
