Vol. 560 No. 2

Requests to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with four different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately and I will call Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. On the first topic I received notice from Deputy O'Sullivan and I call on her to state the matter.

In accordance with the terms of Standing Order 31 I wish to give notice of my intention to seek to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent attention, namely, the serious crime situation in Limerick that has seen over the past week the murder of one man, the critical shooting of another and the abduction of two further men, who thankfully have been restored to their family, and the need for the Government to urgently spell out the measures it intends to take to deal with gangland crime. In view of the importance of the issue I hope you will agree to it.

Deputies

Where is Willie?

The matter is not in order under Standing Order 31. In regard to the second topic I received notice from Deputy Sargent. I now call on him to state the matter.

I seek the Adjournment of Dáil Éireann under Standing Order 31 to clarify the veracity of the perception by the US Embassy in Ireland that US citizens in Ireland are living under a threat of terrorism, sufficiently large to warrant the need to be prepared to leave Ireland at very short notice, and if the Irish Government intends to issue a similar briefing to Irish citizens.

The matter is not in order under Standing Order 31. In regard to the third topic I have received notice from Deputy Morgan and I now call on Deputy Morgan to state the matter.

I seek leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, namely, the failure of the Taoiseach to state yesterday in the House the Government's position on what responses it will make in the event of unilateral action by the US armed forces in Iraq and the failure to schedule a debate in Government time on Iraq and the whole issue even though promises to do so had been made as far back as October last.

The matter is not in order under Standing Order 31. In regard to the fourth topic I have received notice from Deputy Ó Snodaigh and I call on him to state the matter.

I seek leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, namely, the Supreme Court decision that has reduced thousands of Irish born children to the status of second class citizens on the basis of ethnicity alone, that paved the way for the de facto deportation of thousands of these Irish citizens, together with their parents, contravened the rights of these Irish children under the International Convention on the Rights of Children which Ireland has ratified and that this will only encourage racism in Irish society and immigration policy but may also lead to discrimination against women asylum seekers.

The matter is not in order under Standing Order 31.
