Vol. 560 No. 3

Written Answers. - Care of the Elderly.

Pat Breen

Question:

337 Mr. P. Breen asked the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding an action plan for dementia in the day care centre in Clarecastle, County Clare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2591/03]

Responsibility for the provision of services in County Clare rests with the Mid-Western Health Board. I am advised by the board that Clarecastle Day Centre Limited has proposed to build a day centre adjoining the existing centre, specifically for Alzheimer's sufferers. Plans have been drawn up by the committee and planning permission has been applied for and approved.

The Mid-Western Health Board has advised that the Clarecastle proposal is under consideration, along with a number of others from groups in County Clare including Carrigoran House and the Alzheimer's Society. The board has co-ordinated a number of meetings with these groups to encourage a proactive and participative approach. The next step will be to reach agreement with the various parties on a prioritised approach to developing services in the light of available resources.
