Vol. 560 No. 4

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Personnel.

Mary Upton

Question:

185 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Defence the reason a person (details supplied) in Dublin 10 has been unable to enrol in the Naval Service. [2984/03]

The day to day administration of recruitment to the Defence Forces is the responsibility of the Chief of Staff. In relation to this particular case I have been advised by the military authorities that the person in question was graded "temporarily unfit" following examination by a medical officer on 12 November 2002.

At the suggestion of the medical officer the individual attended a specialist with the condition identified at his medical examination. The specialist subsequently furnished a report to the medical officer and having reviewed this report, the medical officer considered that the individual did not satisfy the required medical standards for enlistment in the Naval Service. He was advised accordingly by letter on 12 December 2002.

It will be appreciated that the nature of the individual's medical condition is confidential and is solely a matter between him and the medical officer.
