Vol. 561 No. 1

Written Answers. - Overseas Development Aid.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

125 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health and Children the way in which he has responded to the call by the Ireland-Cuba Medical Association (details supplied) for second hand unwanted medical equipment to meet urgent need for supplies in Cuba. [3456/03]

My Department has consulted the Department of Foreign Affairs with regard to the provision of aid to Cuba. I understand that Ireland Aid has supported a number of valuable projects in Cuba, including a rural development-food security programme in partnership with Trocaire and a Portuguese non-governmental organisation. The programme is being implemented by the National Association of Small Producers in Cuba. In 2001, Ireland Aid contributed to UNICEF's activities in the aftermath of Hurricane Michelle. Ireland Aid is well placed to consider future requests for support to Cuba under the human rights and democratisation scheme or the NGO co-financing scheme.

Question No. 126 answered with Question No. 101.
