Question:

149 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the amount which was spent in his Department for 2002 for media purposes and advertising; the areas in which the money was spent, that is, national papers, provincial papers, RTE radio, local radios and so on; the amount of money which was spent on videos for promotional, educational or advertising purposes; the public relations staff which are employed in his Department; and the cost for 2002. The expenditure in 2002 for media purposes and advertising for my Department was €92,299. In addition, the cultural institutions spent €231,893 in 2002 under these headings. The amount spent on advertising relating to the Department was €78,014. In addition, €127,247 was spent by the cultural institutions. This was spent largely in relation to the national newspapers with some expenditure by the cultural institutions in relation to local press and radio.

Media expenditure by the Department amounted to €21,485 in respect of its PR contract, which expired in October 2002, media monitoring services and photographic services. In addition, €97,446 was spent by the cultural institutions on external PR consultants, media marketing, photography and media monitoring. There was no expenditure on videos over this period. I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 254 dated 12 February 2002 in relation to the public relations staff employed by my Department during the period in question.
