Vol. 561 No. 4

Written Answers. - Vaccination Programme.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

381 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Health and Children the outcome of discussions with the Irish Vaccine Group who met with his officials in April 2002; if a compensation fund has been set up in order to redress this serious situation and compensate the affected parties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4616/03]

I met with two representatives of the Irish Vaccine Injury Campaign on 16 April 2002 and the matters raised by them are under consideration by my Department at present. My officials are examining details of vaccine injury compensation schemes in place in other countries. On completion of this examination, further investigation will take place into the clinical and administrative aspects of the most relevant models and a report on the issue will be prepared. At that stage I will consider the introduction of a compensation scheme.
