Vol. 562 No. 6

Written Answers - Teachers' Remuneration.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

110 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the case of a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary; if, in view of the extreme trauma which this person's family has suffered, the extension of the person's sick-leave pay will be sanctioned; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6879/03]

Teachers are allowed a maximum of 365 days paid sick leave in a consecutive period of four years. Paid sick leave is granted to an individual teacher based on need and on the assumption that there is a reasonable prospect that the teacher will recover and be able to resume full teaching service within a reasonable period. This arrangement is of general application to all teachers and it would not be appropriate for an exception to be made in individual cases.
