Vol. 563 No. 2

Written Answers - School Transport.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

212 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science if school bus transport will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Cork attending a primary school. [7558/03]

In the case of school amalgamations, pupils residing in a closed school area, where the closed school would have been their nearest school had it remained open, may be deemed eligible for transport to the school of amalgamation only. The family concerned reside in a closed school area, which amalgamated with another school in the area. As the pupil concerned is not attending the school of amalgamation, he is not basically eligible for free transport. However, as there is no suitable transport to the appropriate school from the family's area, concessionary fare-paying transport may be allowed to the school concerned without the agreement of his appropriate school. Tickets may be purchased from the local Bus Éireann office. The current charge for concessionary tickets is €26.00 per pupil per term. In the event that the family holds a valid medical card the fare may be waived.
