Vol. 563 No. 2

Written Answers - Garda Operations.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

138 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the action he intends to take on foot of the report received from the Garda Commission into the treatment of two persons (details supplied) arrested in Grafton Street in April 1998, who received an apology and undisclosed damages in a settlement announced in the High Court on 12 July 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7343/03]

The Deputy is aware that I received the Garda report in relation to the incident on the morning of 6 February. He will appreciate, therefore, that in answering Question No. 7 of 6 February I needed some time to consider the report before making a comment on it. My reply made clear that I would seek clarification and elaboration of some aspects of the Garda report. I have done this and I have received further information from the commissioner. In this regard, the commissioner has indicated that he is pursuing certain aspects of the matter. I will consider what action is appropriate in the light of the commissioner's further report which I expect shortly.
