The 2003 building programme has now been published and full details on individual projects are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. I am pleased to inform the Deputy that a large-scale project for Yellowfurze national school has been included in this year's school building programme.

John Bruton

Question:

181 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the provision of a new national school at Johnstown; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8657/03]

Based on the recommendations of the Commission on School Accommodation, I have put in place a revised application procedure for new national schools seeking official recognition. The revised procedure applies to schools intending to commence operation from 1 September 2003 onwards. As part of this new arrangement, applications for new schools will be assessed by a new schools advisory committee, which will consult with interested parties and report to me.

An application for a new parish school in Johnstown, Navan, County Meath, is one of a number of applications for recognition currently being assessed by the new schools advisory committee. The outcome of its deliberations on all applications, including Johnstown, is expected shortly. It is my intention to notify each applicant of my decision on each case by 30 April 2003.
