Written Answers - School Curriculum.

Finian McGrath

Question:

189 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if a number of second level schools do not allow their pupils to play Gaelic games; and the action he can take regarding this ban. [8721/03]

My Department has not been made aware of any schools which do not allow students to play Gaelic games. The PE syllabus has seven areas of study and one of these is games. For curricular purposes, games are divided into a further three categories, one of which includes field games such as Gaelic football, hurling, rugby and soccer. Not all of these would be included in any one programme. Rather, the choice of game would be influenced by the balance of the programme, resources and facilities. The choice of games for the extra-curricular programme is a matter for individual schools and is usually influenced by considerations such as ethos and traditions of schools.
