202 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if the Thomastown scouts have been approved for a grant by Kilkenny VEC; if the group qualifies for a grant under the youth and sport programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8947/03]

Thomastown scouts are eligible for funding under the local youth club grant scheme. County Kilkenny VEC has confirmed that a cheque of €1,000 issued to Thomastown scouts on 21 March 2003.

The Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, through the Irish Sports Council, administers the sports for young people grant scheme. This pro vides funding to local sports clubs and organisations, and therefore the question of funding for the Thomastown Scouts under that scheme is a matter for the Irish Sports Council.
