Vol. 564 No. 1

Written Answers - Road Safety.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

320 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will address the issue of accident blackspots on the roads throughout the country with a view to taking corrective steps; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9022/03]

The 2000 non-national road grant allocations included for the first time specific provision to enable low cost safety improvement works on non-national roads to be carried out by local authorities. In the three years 2000 to 2002, expenditure of €4,914,414 enabled low cost safety improvement works to be carried out at over 350 locations on non-national roads. Some €2,569,020 was allocated under this category in 2003 and I expect that by the end of the year improvements will be carried out at a further 166 locations.
