Vol. 564 No. 1

Written Answers - House Prices.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

323 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the current average price of a first time buyer's home in the greater Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9025/03]

Information on average prices paid for new and second-hand properties both nationally and in selected areas are set out in my Department's Housing Statistics Bulletin, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. Data are not provided to my Department on house prices to the greater Dublin area. In September 2002, the average price paid for a new and second-hand house in Dublin city and counties was €266,742 and €300,599 respectively.

Indicative data available to the Department shows that on average, a first time buyer paid 11.5% less than the average price for a new house in Dublin and 22% less than the average price for a second hand house in Dublin. Therefore it is estimated that in September 2002, first time buyers paid on average approximately €235,000 and €236,000 for a new and second-hand house in Dublin.
