Vol. 564 No. 1

Written Answers - Rented Dwellings Register.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

102 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if just an estimated 20% of rented houses and apartments are registered under the Housing (Registration of Rented Dwellings) Regulations with local authorities; the steps being taken to ensure that all landlords comply with the requirement to register; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8753/03]

Responsibility for enforcing the Housing (Registration of Rented Houses) Regulations 1996 rests with local authorities, who have been advised by my Department of the need to put in place effective arrangements in this regard. According to statistics supplied to my Department, at the end of September 2002, there were 24,983 houses registered with local authorities. I understand from the Central Statistics Office that the number of units in the private rented sector, as measured in the 2002 Census, will be available in March 2004.
