Vol. 564 No. 1

Written Answers - Motor Taxation.

Richard Bruton

Question:

131 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will consider moving to graduated motor taxation on the basis of emissions rather than on the basis of engine capacity. [5473/03]

The existing motor tax system for cars is based on a graded scale of payment increasing as the engine capacity of the vehicle increases. As stated in the 2000 national climate change strategy and reiterated in An Agreed Programme for Government, the Government is committed to further rebalancing of the motor tax regime to favour the purchase of more fuel-efficient vehicles with corresponding lower CO2 emissions. In this context my Department is currently examining the relationship of motor tax to CO2 emissions in terms of delivery of significant CO2 emissions reductions, equity and revenue safeguarding.
