Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 8 Apr 2003

Vol. 564 No. 5

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 and I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted them to my office.

I seek the Adjournment of Dáil Éireann under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent national importance, namely, the proposed withdrawal of public liability insurance cover by health boards from funeral directors and the embalming professions and the health boards' insistence that these undertaking professions indemnify the health boards to the extent of between €6.5 million and €12 million, thereby off-loading previously borne costs and compelling these professions to take out this insurance cover at a considerable personal cost.

I seek the Adjournment of the House under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent business, namely, the appropriate response of this country to the deteriorating situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where thousands of people have died as a result of ongoing military conflict.

I seek the Adjournment of Dáil Éireann under Standing Order 31 to facilitate a debate on the following matter of urgent national importance: the impending strike next Monday by 270 public health doctors at a time when emergency plans should be in place to deal with a possible epidemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome.

I seek the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, namely, the disgraceful manner in which 152 low-paid public servants who are members of the Civil and Public Service Union have been locked out by management in the Department of Agriculture and Food offices in counties Kerry, Limerick, Mayo and Galway because of their involvement in legitimate industrial action.

I seek the Adjournment of Dáil Éireann under Standing Order 31 to address an urgent matter, namely, the reason permission was granted for the extension of landing facilities for US military aircraft to Dublin Airport following two such troop carrier aircraft being observed early last Saturday morning at a remote location at Dublin Airport; and for the Government to explain when changes in policy which had been confined to Shannon occurred.

I seek the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss an important matter, namely, the financial hardship foisted on the farming community arising from a strike at many district livestock offices throughout the country; if there are lines of communication between the Department of Agriculture and Food and the unions involved to provide a service to farmers who need permits to sell cattle, particularly in herds afflicted with TB and brucellosis reactors, and where animals have to be sold on age grounds to meet export market requirements; to seek clarification on whether the strike will hinder the payment of the 20% suckler cow grant now due for over two months; and the impact of the strike on the 2002 extensification payments due to farmers next month.

I seek the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, namely, the need to investigate the growing evidence and make public any findings following the killing of an individual in Inchicore at the weekend and that gardaí at the highest level are allegedly sanctioning, encouraging and facilitating major criminals and drug dealers in their activities in return for low level information on other criminals or because members of the force have been compromised.

Deputy Ó Caoláin is not in the House. Having considered all the matters raised, they are not in order under Standing Order 31.
