Vol. 564 No. 5

Written Answers - Garda Stations.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Question:

340 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the plans by the Garda Commissioner to close one of the two Garda stations in the Crumlin area of Dublin; if he would advise the Garda Commissioner that such a step would be a retrograde step, especially given that the area covered by the Garda division in which both stations are located has recorded the highest murder rate in the country and has a massive drugs and violent crime problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9482/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources and for the day-to-day management of the force, that there are currently no plans to close Garda stations in the Dublin metropolitan region. The optimum use of Garda stations in the Dublin area is being considered as part of a major review of the Garda organisation structures under the strategic management initiative programme of modernisation. That review is not yet completed. On completion, the review will be submitted for consideration by Government.
