Vol. 564 No. 5

Written Answers - Garda Deployment.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Question:

374 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that since the Ballyfermot Garda station was downgraded last year, there has been a reduced Garda presence and service to that area; if he has suggested to the Garda Commissioner that he reconsider this decision; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9519/03]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources, including personnel, that on 8 December 2001 the district headquarters for the "L" district moved from Ballyfermot to Clondalkin Garda station. This involved the transfer of four Garda personnel of all ranks from Ballyfermot to Clondalkin Garda station. This was merely the transfer of the administrative functions of the district from one garda station to another. There has been no diminution of the service provided to the public.

The current personnel strength of Ballyfermot Garda station as at 4 April 2003 is 76 consisting of all ranks. This represents an increase of 3 since 31 December 1997.

The situation will be kept under review and when additional personnel next become available the needs of Ballyfermot Garda station will be fully considered within the context of the overall needs of Garda stations throughout the country.
