Vol. 564 No. 5

Written Answers - Prison Medical Service.

Dan Neville

Question:

410 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has plans to introduce multifaceted teams of psychologists and councillors headed by a psychiatrist which is accepted as international good practice for prisoners with severe personality disorders. [10049/03]

Prisoners who are diagnosed with personality disorders have access to medical, nursing, psychiatric, and psychology services within the prison system. In addition, prisoners have access to counselling and support services under the aegis of the probation and welfare service. Any treatment programme provided would be a matter for the professional judgment of the services involved.

In the context of services provided for this particular group in the general community, it is considered that the current prison based services are in line with community norms. In the event that service provision in the community health system for this group was to alter dramatically I would keep the matter under review.
