Ireland continues to monitor the situation in Mozambique through our embassy in Maputo. The overall situation in the country remains stable and the general economic climate is positive, although the country continues to face many problems including war damage, under development and recurrent natural disasters.
One of the main developments in Mozambique in recent months was the trial and conviction of a number of individuals involved in the killing of journalist Carlos Cardoso. Cardoso was murdered in November 2000 following his investigation of a banking scandal. The successful inves tigation and trial were welcomed by the international community. During the trial, a number of serious issues regarding crime and corruption in Mozambique were raised. The EU has conveyed its concerns to the Mozambiquan authorities and has expressed its willingness to continue working with them to tackle these and other problems facing the country.
Local elections are scheduled to take place in Mozambique later this year, marking an important milestone in the strengthening of the democratic process in Mozambique. Presidential elections are scheduled for 2004. The international community will continue to support the democratic process in Mozambique.
