Vol. 565 No. 1

Written Answers. - Security Co-operation.

Tom Hayes

Question:

141 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the organisations which have a role in security co-operation of which Ireland is a member. [10028/03]

Ireland plays an active and constructive role in a number of international organisations with a role in security co-operation. These are the United Nations, the European Union, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council, the multilateral political framework for countries participating in Partnership for Peace. Ireland also holds observer status in the Western European Union, an organisation which has effectively become moribund since the transfer to the EU of its crisis management-related functions.

While all of the aforementioned organisations of which Ireland is a member have distinct natures and structures, they are essentially mutually reinforcing in their approaches to security co-operation and work together constructively at many levels in a bid to achieve international peace and stability.
