Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

323 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in relation to the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 64 of 27 March 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11764/03]

Having considered the matter in detail, I have decided that the National Centre for Visually Impaired Children should not go ahead. Department officials have met and formally advised the chairperson of the boards of management of St. Joseph's Special School and Pobalscoil Rosmíní of the position. The Drumcondra authorities have been requested, also, to review the scope to develop St. Joseph's as a co-educational special school for the visually impaired from September next. A formal response in that regard is awaited. My officials will continue to keep the parent referred to by the Deputy and the national parents body, FÉACH, advised of developments.
