Vol. 566 No. 2

Written Answers. - Personal Injuries Assessment Board.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

66 Mr. Quinn asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment when the promised Personal Injuries Assessment Board will be established on a statutory basis; her views on recent claims made by the IBEC director of enterprise that vested interests were preventing the establishment of the board on a statutory basis; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12280/03]

I appointed the chairperson and ordinary members of the interim board of the Personal Injuries Assessment Board, PIAB, on 27 November last. One of the tasks of the interim board is to contribute to the preparation of the requisite legislation to put the PIAB on a statutory basis. The preparation of this legislation necessitated contact with a number of interested groups and their views were considered in the formulation of the legislation and taken on board where appropriate. I intend to bring to Government shortly the general scheme of a Bill to establish the PIAB on a statutory basis. I will be seeking Government approval for the drafting of the Bill and also for publication of the general scheme so that the views of interested parties can be elicited.
