Vol. 566 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Computer Systems.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

133 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps being taken to ensure that inappropriate or false information regarding citizens is not retained on the Garda PULSE computer system, having regard to the case highlighted in the recent report of the Data Protection Commissioner; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12786/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that data recording and reviewing processes on the PULSE systems are undertaken in accordance with the procedures stipulated for PULSE data entry and in accordance with data protection procedures. Moreover, records are reviewed at supervisory level to ensure accuracy.

It should be noted that, in relation to the case mentioned by the Deputy, the data protection commissioner requested the gardaí to revise their procedures to ensure that a similar type situation cannot arise in the future and he reported that his request had been acted on by the gardaí.
