Vol. 566 No. 5

Written Answers. - Health Services.

Michael Ring

Question:

104 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children if the person who was conducting the smear clinics in County Mayo has retired; if so, when they are going to be replaced; when the clinics will be held again right around County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13265/03]

I am advised by the Western Health Board that although the public health nurse who was employed to carry out smear clinics in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon has not retired, she has ceased to provide this service outside of the Galway area. The board has stated that concerted efforts are currently being made to recruit an individual with the expertise, knowledge and skill necessary to provide a cervical smear testing service in Mayo and Roscommon. Recommencement of the clinics will depend on the availability of individuals with the knowledge and skills required.
