Vol. 567 No. 3

Written Answers. - Animal Disease Controls.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

98 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the way in which all the carcases arising from the beef destruction scheme and the foot and mouth prevention measures have been disposed of; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14179/03]

In the case of foot and mouth disease, animals from the infected farm were buried on the farm in question with assistance and advice from the local authority. Other animals which were slaughtered on a precautionary basis were rendered and the resultant meat and bone meal was exported for incineration.

Similarly, the carcases of animals slaughtered under the purchase for destruction scheme were rendered. Most of the meat and bone meal generated has been exported for incineration and arrangements are being made for the export of the remaining amounts which are at present kept in secure stores pending export for destruction.
