Vol. 567 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fishing Vessel Licences.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

148 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the reason for the refusal of a drift net license in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [14168/03]

Primary responsibility for the protection, development, conservation and management of inland fisheries, including the allocation of drift net licences, is a matter for the relevant local regional fisheries board, in this case the South-Western Regional Fisheries Board. The board allocates commercial fishing licences in accordance with the criteria laid down under the Control of Fishing for Salmon Orders 1980 to 1997. As my Department has no role in the allocation of such licences, I have forwarded the Deputy's query to the chief executive officer of the board and asked him to reply directly in the matter.
