Vol. 567 No. 3

Written Answers. - Food Labelling.

Michael Ring

Question:

70 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his plans to improve the labelling of foodstuffs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13918/03]

I established the Food Labelling Group in July 2002 to examine issues surrounding food labelling in the context of consumer expectations about the food they buy and to come forward with recommendations by the end of the year.

The group which was widely representative of the major stakeholders in the food chain – consumer interests, industry, Government Departments and agencies – presented its report to me on 19 December 2002.

The report contains 21 broad ranging recommendations, most of which will need further consultation with the European Commission, other Government Departments and agencies. The European Commission has also initiated consultation with member states as part of its current review of food labelling legislation. This report of the Food Labelling Group will form the basis of Irelands input into this process.

I have established an interdepartmental agency committee to progress the recommendations contained within the report. This committee comprises Department of Agriculture and Food; Department of Health and Children; Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment; Food Safety Authority of Ireland; and Food Safety Promotion Board.
