Vol. 567 No. 6

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Finian McGrath

Question:

96 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance the mechanisms that are in place to strengthen the enforcement of the 3% quota for recruiting people with disabilities into the Civil Service. [13749/03]

The recent review of the 3% target for the employment of people with a disability in the Civil Service has been completed. The report provides useful information about the position of people with a disability working in the Civil Service and makes recommendations for practical steps which can be taken to make certain that the Government's policy operates effectively for the benefit of people with a disability.

Discussions are under way between the equality unit in my Department and the Civil Service staff unions on the recommendations. The aim is to agree a new joint approach to the implementation of the target which would be put to the Government for approval. Agreement has been reached with the Civil Service staff unions on an outline approach to developing action plans to ensure the effective implementation of the policy.
