Vol. 568 No. 1

Written Answers. - Medals of Good Conduct.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

224 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider awarding medals of good conduct to ex-soldiers who never had a charge or conviction made against them as in the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11, similar to the medals currently being awarded to present-day soldiers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15565/03]

The good conduct medal was awarded during the period 16 September 1987 to 30 January 1990 to non-commissioned officers and privates who were eligible for the award. The person to whom the Deputy refers retired from the Defence Forces in 1983 before the award came into being. The award was discontinued in 1990 and there is no longer a good conduct medal. It is considered that the current range of medals awardable to the Defence Forces is appropriate and adequate.
