Vol. 568 No. 1

Written Answers. - Flooding Policy Group.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

290 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance if he will expand the remit of the Flooding Policy Review Group, established by the Office of Public Works, to include as an objective, ensuring the protection of the environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16070/03]

I am satisfied with the existing terms of reference under which the review group is working and can assure the Deputy that protection of the environment and the promotion of a policy on the State response to flooding that provides for sustainable development is a key issue for the group.

The terms of reference require the review group to assess the impacts that flooding has on society – this includes environmental impacts. The group is also to propose prioritisation criteria for future expenditure on flood relief. I have no doubt the group will attach a high priority to environmental considerations in any such criteria.

The Deputy may wish to note that the group includes representatives from the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. In addition a considerable number of submissions were received and meetings held with persons and groups concerned primarily with environmental issues.
