Vol. 568 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Marian Harkin

Question:

327 Ms Harkin asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of pupils who were originally recommended as needing resource teaching or special needs support; and the number who were subsequently denied resource hours or special needs support. [15326/03]

During the most recent round of applications for additional resources, the school in question applied in respect of four children and submitted professional reports in support of the applications. When the reports had been examined, insufficient data had been supplied to confirm that one child was eligible for resource hours but a full-time special needs assistant was however recommended. Resource hours as applied for were recommended for the second child. In the case of the two other children, the data supplied in the professional reports did not conform to the criteria as outlined in my Department's circular letters 7/02 and 8/02. Additional resources were therefore not recommended in these cases.
