Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

346 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding approval and subsequent grant aid for St. Cuan's secondary school, Castleblakney, Ballinasloe, County Galway, for the replacement of a roof which was completed in February 2003; when his Department will give approval to proceed to construction; if approval to proceed in Phase 2 will be sanctioned in 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15497/03]

My Department approved roof works at St. Cuan's secondary school, Castleblakney, Ballinasloe, County Galway, in 2002. These works were subsequently carried out and the relevant grant aid has been paid subject to the usual retention.

With regard to the provision of temporary accommodation at the school, the tender report has been submitted to my Department. This is currently being examined. When the appropriate analysis has been completed a decision on the matter will issue directly to the school management authority.

In view of the scale of the 2003 school building programme as published and having regard to the level of financial commitments to be met from projects already in construction, my Department does not envisage that it will be in a position during this year to allow the proposed refurbishment works to proceed. The timing of this project is dependent on the financial allocation for 2004 and subsequent years and the competing priorities for this funding.

The proposed new school at St. Columba's national school, Kilmacrennan, County Donegal, is at an early stage of architectural planning. The date on which projects at early stages of architectural planning can progress to tender and construction will depend on the budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years and the priority afforded to each project.

The proposed extension at St. Mura's national school, Buncrana, County Donegal, is at an advanced stage of architectural planning. The date on which this project can progress to tender and construction will depend on the budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years and the priority afforded to each project.
