Written Answers. - Departmental Properties.

Tony Gregory

Question:

373 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress made to date in transferring the lands at Grangegorman, Dublin 7, to the Dublin Institute of Technology; the process by which a master plan will be drawn up for the future development of these lands; the make-up of the development authority which will oversee the redevelopment of the lands; the timescale involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15787/03]

In April 2002 the Government agreed that a statutory Grangegorman development agency be established to commence work on the integrated urban design and land use framework plan for the Grangegorman site and to manage the Grangegorman site as agent for the Eastern Regional Health Authority, the Dublin Institute of Technology and the Departments involved. The Government also approved the preparation of the necessary scheme of legislation by the Department of Education and Science in consultation with the Department of Health and Children.

While work is ongoing in the preparation of the legislation it will not be completed until after the summer recess. The details associated with the development of the Grangegorman site can only be fully addressed when the necessary legislation is in place.

Question:

374 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science the assistance his Department has been able to make available to the Dublin 7 Educate Together national school; the time-scale by which a permanent site will be available on the Grangegorman lands, Dublin 7; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15789/03]

A statutory body is being established to determine the overall use of the Grangegorman site, including the possibility of providing a site there for Dublin 7 Educate Together. The details associated with the development of the Grangegorman site can only be fully addressed when the necessary legislation for the establishment of the statutory body is in place. While work is ongoing in the preparation of the legislation it will not be completed until after the summer recess.

In 2002 my Department grant aided a substantial refurbishment of St. Joseph's School for the Deaf in Cabra to act as temporary accommodation for Dublin 7 Educate Together. This year the school has been included in the 2003 building programme – section 11 (primary) – for the provision of an autism unit and additional mainstream accommodation.
