Fergus O'Dowd

Question:

98 Mr. O'Dowd asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress to date on the programme to provide youth services on off-shore islands; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14484/03]

Grant-in-aid assistance is made avail able annually by my Department through the special projects for youth scheme to muintearas to provide a range of youth-related activities, mainly in the Gaeltacht and island regions. In addition to the functions conferred on them by the Vocational Education (Amendment) Act 2001, vocational education committees will be required, under the terms of the Youth Work Act 2001, to ensure the provision of youth work programmes or youth work services, or both, within their administrative areas.
