Vol. 568 No. 1

Written Answers. - Marine Rescue Service.

Michael Ring

Question:

456 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources when the Delta RIB boat will be restored to the Irish Coast Guard group in Achill, County Mayo. [15903/03]

The Coast Guard management has advised me that the D Class boat currently in use by the Achill Island Coast Guard unit is appropriate to the needs of the unit as it is very suitable in cliff rescue operations. It can also be used in search operations, weather permitting.

The Coast Guard also advised me that the RNLI intend placing a RIB class lifeboat in Achill Island in conjunction with their all weather lifeboat in 2004. To place a RIB class boat in the Coast Guard station would also, therefore, duplicate resources.

I have asked the Irish Coast Guard to continue to monitor the situation and to reconsider the matter should circumstances demand.

Question No. 457 answered with Question No. 448.
