Vol. 568 No. 2

Written Answers. - Mobile Telephony.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

73 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the degree to which mobile technology is keeping pace with international development and competition in this field; if adequate improvements and investment is taking place to maintain a competitive edge; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16024/03]

Mobile networks in Ireland are constantly evolving. The operators are developing their current networks to provide new applications based on data services. Recent surveys indicate a market penetration of 79%. This equates to approximately three million subscribers. In addition to the mobile cellular networks, other networks such as WLAN networks are being developed and the Deputy is no doubt aware that I have funded some trials of this technology.

Concerning future networks, the Commission for Communications Regulation has, following a competition, issued three licenses for the next generation of mobile networks called third generation or 3G. The development of third generation networks worldwide has not been as fast as previously envisaged. It is expected that roll-out of third generation mobile services will take place in Ireland at about the same time as these services are being launched in the EU.
