Vol. 568 No. 2

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31. I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the ongoing 12 week strike at the district veterinary offices in counties Galway, Mayo, Kerry, Limerick and Cork; to highlight once again the hardship caused to hundreds of farmers who have become innocent victims in a strike not of their making; to clarify where the Government stands on a solemn commitment given to the High Court last week that arrangements have been put in place to assist farmers with particular animal health problems; and, given that such commitments have not been fulfilled, to ask if the Government will demand that senior Department of Agriculture and Food officials who fail to carry out such ministerial instructions will be asked to stand aside to allow the necessary certificates to be made available to farmers.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 on the following specific and important matter of public interest: the unacceptable presence of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy McDowell, in the Dáil bar when he should have been in the Dáil Chamber responding to questions from Members of this House on a serious issue involving the death of a young man.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following important matter: the ongoing delay in the publication of the education for persons with disabilities Bill. It is like an everlasting gob-stopper in that the Final Stages will not be reached, at the earliest, until the Dáil resumes in October. While I hope that there will be good measures in the Bill, the delay will have a knock-on effect on the disabilities Bill which the Taoiseach has indicated will not be introduced until the other Bill has passed through the House. This could be bad news for people with disabilities.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to address an urgent matter: the circumstances which resulted in the spillage of 150 gallons of nitric acid in Mulhuddart in west Dublin and the need to review the conditions applying to the transportation of such hazardous and dangerous goods.

Having considered the matters raised, I do not consider them to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motions.
