Vol. 568 No. 2

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

131 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will appoint an inspector to investigate the circumstances whereby a person (details supplied) who has four children, one born here, has lost their work permit due to the fact that their employer will not produce payslips and due to related poor practice; and if she will review this person's work permit in order that they can seek employment while the investigation is proceeding. [16197/03]

A work permit application in respect of the employee in question was received last year. Further information was requested from the employer in question in December 2002, in regard to pay slips, the P60 and deductions from pay. A reply from the employer is still outstanding in regard to the renewal of the work permit.

In the light of matters now raised by the Deputy, the labour inspectorate has been advised of the circumstances of this case and inquiries will commence without prejudice and in accordance with normal procedures. A casefile has been opened and an inspector will visit the employer in question with a view to examining the records that an employer is required to maintain under relevant employment legislation.
