Vol. 568 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Michael Ring

Question:

49 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the difference between a degree of bachelor of arts technology - food studies - secondary education as awarded by the University of Leeds and the Irish equivalent; and the measures a person (details supplied) in County Mayo can take to bring their qualification in line with an Irish degree. [16283/03]

The person to whom the Deputy refers has sought recognition of her qualifications, including her degree from Leeds University, for the purpose of appointment as a teacher of home economics and religion in a community school. The material submitted by the person in question in relation to her course of study leading to this degree has been examined and a substantial shortfall was found in the area of textiles, a topic essential to the teaching of the full home economics programme at post-primary level. The shortfall can be addressed by means of a course of relevant study at a recognised third level institution and the person in question has been advised of this by officials of my Department.
