Vol. 569 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

12 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he expects to receive the report from the steering group working under the SMI, considering whether or not some Garda stations should be closed overnight; his views on this proposal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17107/03]

The optimum use of Garda stations is being considered as part of a major review of the Garda organisation structures under the strategic management initiative programme of modernisation. This is the first comprehensive review of structures and operating systems of the Garda Síochána since its establishment. The review has looked in detail at a range of areas within the organisation. I expect to receive the SMI steering group's report in this matter in the near future and I will give careful consideration to all its recommendations, including any it may make on the opening hours of Garda stations.
