Vol. 569 No. 1

Written Answers. - Science Foundation Ireland.

Joe Higgins

Question:

66 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the procedures carried out by Science Foundation Ireland before entering into contracts with colleges for funding research projects to ensure that these institutions meet all the criteria and conditions attached to such funding; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17267/03]

The procedures carried out by Science Foundation Ireland before entry into contracts with institutions for funding research projects are a matter for the board of the foundation and I have no direct function in such matters.

The board of the foundation manages, allocates, monitors and evaluates expenditure on such research funding and has appointed an audit committee to ensure appropriate and proper accountability for the disbursement and management of such funds.

I am fully confident that, given the calibre and ability of the board appointed, such procedures are both appropriate and effective.
