Vol. 569 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Olwyn Enright

Question:

240 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science the precise amount of money expended by his Department in the rental of school accommodation at primary level for 2002; the schools in which accommodation is currently rented; the total expended in each case for 2002; the projected expenditure on rental of accommodation for 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17431/03]

In 2002 expenditure on the rental of temporary premises for primary schools was €8.402 million. The allocation for 2003 is €8.489 million. The allocation is intended to cover grant-aid to primary schools for the rental and associated costs of temporary accommodation of all kinds.

A list of the schools currently renting accommodation is being compiled in my Department at present and will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as it becomes available.

Seán Ryan

Question:

241 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has approved the sale of a portion of land at Malahide community school, County Dublin, to facilitate a development of the adjoining site at a time when his Department is unable to meet its promises of a new school to accommodate 1200 pupils which has already limited the playing area for the pupils; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the proposed apartment block which he is accommodating will interfere with the senior block of the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17435/03]

My Department has received an application for the sale of a portion of land at Malahide community school, County Dublin. While my Department has no objection in principle to the proposed sale, a number of points of detail require to be addressed before the matter can or will be progressed.
